Design Statement:

El Mito deals with themes of family, grief, and changing yourself to fit the norm. Our production focused on addressing your grief and healing from it, and the harmful effects of trying to bury your grief. The monsters literally feed off of the grief of the family and we wanted the audience to understand that trying to pretend everything is alright can be more harmful in the long run than addressing your grief head-on, even if it hurts in the moment. For El Mito I focused on creating a separation between the different worlds. I used colors like blues, purples, and greens to represent Michelle’s magical powers. I put an emphasis on shadows and different textures to represent the “other world” that the monsters came from, and I made sure to keep the monsters shrouded in shadows and use darker colors like red to make them seem more menacing.
