Design Statement:
Stef Smith’s Nora: A Doll’s House is a retelling of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House focusing on three different versions of Nora during significant years in women’s history: 1918, 1968 and 2018. Nora’s life slowly swirls out of control as the play progresses, leading to cracks in the façade of her life. My design follows the swirling movement into the cracking of Nora’s façade by using a swirling gobo pattern with increasing intensity as the tension in the play grows, and a cracking gobo pattern during the peak moments of high tension.
